Training

Training is understood to be a course activity usually with a small number of participants that goes into aspects of the specific subject matter. The aim of training courses is to teach and make clear certain topics that have been defined beforehand.

In the context of universities, training is offered especially at such shared, central facilities as the library, data processing centre, or e-learning departments. The training courses offers are for employees, students, or also external target groups. The classic topics that are taught at universities are in the fields of teaching methods, competence in digital media, and implementing digital media.

Besides demonstrating certain subject matter, it is sometimes possible to apply this knowledge to practical examples.

The presentation of the training course contents should be geared to the target group, that is, one should find out beforehand in what way the methods or tools to be taught will be used. Accordingly, the trainer should choose especially those practical examples used in class.

A typical training session alternates between demonstration and practice exercises. During the practice exercises, the trainer watches how the participants work and gives support. For larger groups a second trainer or assistant should be available.

Contents of Training Courses:
  • The acquisition of competence in the methods needed is specifically a part of the curriculum in many fields. In contrast to lectures or research courses, the focus of a training course is on practical usage and not on underlying theories.
  • The acquisition of competence with tools plays increasingly an important role especially in media design studies. Often a training course is given before a tutorial or a project.
  • Also the introduction to software systems, for example, learning managements systems, university administration, or library catalogues systems takes place in part in training courses. Often media centres offer training for the various e-learning tools.
Training can be held as in-class, online, or as blended learning courses. Each form can be supported in different ways using the technology of digital media. Also for the preparation and follow-up work, one can find useful digital media support products.

In-Class Training:
For in-class training, there are many possibilities for technical support for organizing and teaching the course.

Online Training:
Online training can be carried out as an in-class activity or it can be available for the participants to access at any time. Read more in online training in-depth.
