Teaching Scenarios

The category Teaching Scenarios uses traditional terminology such as lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical training, team work, and support intentionally. Based on these established types of courses and activities, we would like to provide you here with an introduction to possible scenarios for using digital media in university teaching. In the process, various starting points for possible technical implementation will be presented.

By using digital media, the traditional way of teaching courses can be broken down somewhat. A mixture of different types of teaching styles emerge, starting from enhancing the in-class teaching and continuing to complete virtualization. (Bachmann et al., 2002).

Digital media can be used in in-class teaching for visualizing the information being presented and, by doing so, simply enriching the traditional way of teaching. On a higher degree of integration, information about the course and course materials can be made available in the Internet any time and any place. Other possibilities are a complete virtualization of your course with Hypertext for presenting the course material, computer based communication for discussions and support, or transmitting via Video Conference

We cannot offer you any best practice solutions for these options: The use of digital media in university teaching can be, to varying degrees, worthwhile. One must take the specific conditions and requirements – especially the technical infrastructure - of the university into consideration. Last but not least, your own personal ideas and your own individual teaching style must be considered.

When you select a type of course or activity, you will find in the subsections precise information on how to implement – partially or comprehensively - the virtualization of course contents, communication, and organization of the corresponding type of course.

Further Information:

Generally, one does not seek to replace the in-class course by using digital media but rather seeks meaningful integration of digital media, usually referred to as Blended Learning. The essential elements of the concept are described in Blended Learning in Depth.
