Projekt Work

Projekt Work

The aim of project activities is for students to learn how to critically analyze complex problems and find solutions together with others in a team. In doing so, they can apply their newly learned knowledge and skills.

As an open and problem-based type of teaching (Wörner, 2002), project work is based strongly on being practice relevant and fostering communication skills through teamwork. By working on project tasks, learning at university can be brought closer to the real working world. An authentic task description, either self-chosen or predetermined, is worked on completely together in a team.

Project activities are a relatively modern teaching/learning concept. They are being utilized more and more as an addition and alternative to the traditional types of teaching such as lectures and tutorials. The goal is the active participation of the students through which better learning results are to be expected than through the passive reception of information. (Gräsel, Bruhn, Mandl & Fischer, 1997). However a project puts high demands on the student’s independent study competence and requires including already learned knowledge. For this reason, this form of teaching is more common in the advanced courses.

Examples:
  • In the context of supplementary studies, competence in problem solving is offered at the University of Augsburg where the acquisition of those skills needed in all fields is supported and promoted in small self–organized project groups. • In the project eservice.tv, students in the program e-service and business information technology at Stuttgart Media University produce a video-podcast and by doing so learn the subject matter of business information technology in a practical, independent way. Field Report.
  • Netzspannung is a very comprehensive and versatile project and is considered to be a field for experiments and research. It is directed at users from a large circle of artists and media artists. This project features current projects and approaches from the fields of media art, media design, art and media theory, and art education for further education. Teaching units are made available; a platform for students’ media projects is offered as well as the opportunity for exchanging ideas.

Further information on the topic of project work can be found in the methods section of the Category Didactic Design.
