Description

OLAT

HTML       Flash
OLAT stands for Online Learning And Training and is an open source Learning Management System (LMS), that was developed at the University of Zürich with the goal to be able to offer lectures and tutorials on the Internet, whereby the focus lies on the design and implementation of courses.

The following functionalities (among others) are available:
  • Fine-grained digital rights management
  • Group management
  • Course, Test and HTML editor
  • Flexible course system modules that can be configured as needed
  • Evaluation tools
  • Data archiving
  • Personal homepage with a calendar with an overview of courses, bookmarks, notifications, appointments, etc.
  • Message and notification system (via E-Mail or RSS)
  • Collaboration tools for groups (forums, e-mail -service, chat, Wiki, etc.)
  • File upload via WebDAV
  • Translation tools for porting in other languages
  • Tools for collaborating in groups: blog, podcast
Advantages
  • Free and open source
  • Support established e-learning standards for tests and questionnaires (IMS QTI) as well as for other e-teaching contents (SCORM, IMS Content Packaging)
  • Good support for group work
  • Embedding external resources (e. g. webpages or data bases) via Inline Rendering or embedded frames
  • Clear user interface and administration
  • Comfortable (learning) resources management
  • Multilingual documentation and user interface
  • Good search field for learning resources; takes access rights into account
  • Uses Ajax for enhancement of LMS for functions such as Drag & Drop, autocomplete for input fields, and fast page loading.
  • Integration of CMS Framework YAML
  • Chat intergration
  • Embedding external resources: IMS Basic LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) Standard
Disadvantages
  • The server requires Java which not offered by all webhosts. A university’s data processing centre can, however, certainly make it available.
  • Altogether not as powerful as certain (not all) commercial products (z. B. no Whiteboard and no integrated audio nor video conference)

Requirements
OLAT is installed on a web server and has following requirements: You may find more exact information in the documentation section of the product webpage. It would be best to consult the media technology department or the media/data processing centre of your university to find out whether web servers having these technical features are available.
Entry Level
With help of the user manual and the ‚help’ function in the LMS, one may shorten the training period. Also the administration is quite clear thanks to the structural organization in group management, user management, and further configuration. Nevertheless one must expect to need a considerable amount of time for the training phase, as always with learning management systems such as OLAT.
Tutorials
  • In OLAT-LMS there is a ‚help’ function that aside from the general advice and explanations of the OLAT system also addresses drawing up tests, questionnaires, and courses.
